There are a number of options for printing out the content of a website. These can be divided into two main categories: Direct Printing and Text Retrieval.
I. DIRECT PRINTING
Direct Printing is simply printing out what appears on the screen. It has the advantage of printing out the entire screen with all the graphics included. Use this method:
- when you are printing out charts (to retain the format).
- when you plan to use what appears on the screen without
modification.
- when you will edit the text using white out or scissors.
A. Direct Printing (with frames)
The multiple sections visible in a browser window in some web pages are called frames. Frames are problematic for printing because only one of the frames can be printed at a time and sometimes it is not clear which section will come out when you select Print.... To print directly from a website with frames:
- Step 1: Click once in the desired frame to select it.
- Step 2: Click on the Print icon on the toolbar of the browser, or select Print... under File on the menu bar. Be sure to print out only as many pages as you need.
Hint: You can reduce the size of the printing to save paper. Under the File menu of your browser, click on Page Setup... and set Reduce or Enlarge in the dialog box to 80%.
B. Direct Printing (no frames)
For websites without frames, everything you see will be printed out when you select Print.... Be sure to print out only as many pages as you need. To print directly from a website without frames, follow Step 2 from above.
II. TEXT RETRIEVAL
Text Retrieval allows you to save the text in a word processing file, but will not retrieve any graphics on the page. This is recommended when you wish to edit the text before making copies for students. Do not use this method for printing out charts as they will lose their formatting.
A. Copying and Pasting
This method is best used when you wish to use only a portion of the text in a website.
- If the desired text is in a frame, click once in the frame to select it.
- Depress the mouse button at the beginning of the text to be copied, drag to the end of the desired section and release. This will highlight the desired text.
- Once the text has been highlighted, select Copy from the Edit menu. (The selected text is now on the Clipboard.)
- Open a new document in your word processor and select Paste from the Edit menu to paste the selection into the document window.
B. Saving as Text
This method will save all the text on the screen (or in the selected frame) to a desired location. Images will be replaced by [image]
- If the desired text is in a frame, click once in the frame to select it.
- Go to the File menu and select Save as....
- Select Text (not HTML)
- Save the document to the desired location.

Troubleshooting
If you find that the background of a website is interfering with the text you wish to print, it may be possible to eliminate the background. Some combinations of browsers and printers give you a box to check if you want the background printed.
- Select Print from the File menu.
- Make sure that Background is not selected or highlighted anywhere in the Print dialog box.
